Nelson Bourrec Carter is a French-American artist whose art practice combines film, photography and installations. He questions his African American heritage and how learning about a culture that is both intimate and foreign entails fantasy, as well as a negotiated belonging and appropriation. He is interested in the objects of popular culture, such as television series and the history of cinema, especially as they relate to the representations of minorities and landscapes, whether they be urban, peri-urban, or rural. He demonstrates that these visual tropes are more interconnected than they appear and that they articulate questions of gender, race, and class.
Nelson’s films have been shown in festivals such as MoMA’s New Directors/New Films, Entrevues Belfort, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Vila do Conde or in historic institutions like the Cinémathèque Française or the Lincoln Center. His feature documentary debut, "Cathedral City", co-directed with Clément Postec, is currently in production.
Nelson Bourrec Carter est un artiste et réalisateur Franco-Américain dont la pratique articule film, photographie et installation. Ayant grandi en Île-de-France, il interroge son héritage afro-américain et ce que l’apprentissage d’une culture à la fois intime et étrangère suppose de fantasme, d’appartenance négociée et d’appropriation. Il s’intéresse aux objets de culture populaire tels que les séries et l’histoire du cinéma, plus particulièrement dans leur rapport aux représentations minoritaires et au traitement du paysage, qu’il soit urbain, périurbain ou rural.
Ses films ont été montrés dans des festivals tels qu’Entrevues Belfort, Vila do Conde ou les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, à la Cinémathèque Française, mais également dans des institutions comme le MacVal ou le MoMA de New York. Son premier long métrage documentaire “Cathedral City”, co-réalisé avec Clément Postec est actuellement en tournage.
