20.03.2024 // SHE DEVIL XIII - (S)HE DEVIL

I have been invited by curator Dobrila Denigri to be part of the thirteenth edition of the regular review of video work, SHE DEVIL, in Rome, Italy. This year sees the exhibition – exceptionally – featuring a selection of work produced exclusively by male artists. United by their ability to provide insights and perspectives, these works consider patriarchy in its role as a relational system of power and domination.

I’ll be presenting my piece Levittown and the show will run from March 20 to May 24th.

A new book, published by CURA will also celebrate the last two editions of SHE DEVIL

25.10.2023 // THIS IS THE END BY VINCENT DIEUTRE

I was delighted to be a part of Vincent Dieutre’s latest feature, THIS IS THE END, that premiered at the 73rd Berlinale this winter. It is now available to stream on ARTE, at the link below.

La Fin de Tout (This is the End…)

“During the pandemic, the European filmmaker travels to Los Angeles, which is no stranger to spectacle and disaster. Under the Hollywood sign, being constantly in motion is de rigueur: never stop, never look too closely, never develop a feeling of being here. Long tracking shots from the safety of the Ford Mustang take in the city, whose shimmering surfaces reflect back to the filmmaker his own perspective, shaped by cultural criticism. The voids diagnosed by Baudrillard and Bégout, the missing connections, the meaninglessness, the end of the world which has perhaps already occurred, look surprisingly exciting through the tired eyes of the Old World: a 40-year-old love story is rekindled, love’s movements fall out of the cool flow of time, coyotes conquer the gardens, snakes swim in the pools. A chorus of actors share doomsday poems by E. E. Cummings, Ocean Vuong, Claudia Rankine and more with each other; these voices from the New World interrupt the French commentary. And two 70-plus bodies from two extinct worlds synchronise tenderly with the cinema of attractions.”

20.09.2023 // LILANGELES

Between February and July 2023, I was invited by le Centre Culturel Jean Cocteau in partnership with Heart of Los Angeles to develop a documentary project along with artist Christine Yerie Lee, where two groups of teenagers to correspond from one side of the Atlantic to the other via video letters shot on their cell phones. From Les Lillas to Los Angeles, with love.

The participants (re)presented their everyday lives, demystifying all preconceived ideas, and revealing themselves through images as the gateway to an encounter that deconstructs the cliches that confine others as much as themselves.

The result is 6 video letters and a documentary short appropriately titled “lilangeles” that Christine and I crafted together.

06.06.2015 // HERE WITH ME

A show by Camille Ayme and Nelson Bourrec Carter, on view from May 30th to July 5th at Galerie Ygrec, 20 rue Louise Weiss, 75013 Paris.

Here With Me est l’histoire d’une promesse mise à l’épreuve. C’est une chanson de Dido, générique de la série Roswell passée en boucle pendant notre traversée de la ville éponyme. C’est la découverte de la vacuité de l’envers du décor, un road trip déceptif à travers un territoire fictionné.
Here With Me propose une lecture croisée de l'Amérique d'aujourd'hui.

01.06.2015 // SCREEN SELF-SCRIPTING

Speaking about his Screen Test series Andy Warhol remarked of his fascination for factory associates who could “turn on” and “be their own script”. It was as though Warhol was anticipating the intense self-scripting demanded by today’s neoliberal economy. He saw how the subject would be tested and stretched – both physically and physiologically – and expected to acquire a new set of skills for each interview or engagement. In the present series of videos, made by artists based in London, LA, Athens and Paris, self-scripting is examined by the queer subject. The paradigm – our spectacle society – still exacts specific demands vis-à-vis our own subjectivity and the images that we are exposed to – this in turn has co-opted a certain “gay” subject that is politically disengaged or neutral. If Freud was correct when he said that the ego is a kind of image, then it is possible to assume that it acts as a screen onto which we project certain identities and idealizations. Many of the videos presented here examine this through two different modes – and often conflate them. The first, image as commodity, and the second, image as celebrity. Some are purely concerned with the kind of subjectivity that was performed by Warhol’s subjects. Above all, the videos act to deconstruct and interrogate certain received notions we have as subjects vis-à-vis the screen.
